Individual Contribution

Here I’ll be explaining my individual contribution to the project. Firstly I gathered research which I then shared with my group. For my research phase I deconstructed horror posters, magazines and trailers to understand the conventions, I also watched horror films and analysed the plots/narrative, then I researched a range of theorists such as Clover – the final girl theory, Todorov's – Equilibrium, Levi Straus – binary opposition and more, this was to help me  keep these theories in mind for when I began planning my trailer.
I carried out an online survey using SurveyMonkey.com to gather the audiences feedback on what features in horror trailers interested them? what sub-genre they preferred? What gender they preferred to be the leading role? And so on. This feedback helped because when comparing the results I received on my survey with the other members of my group I noticed that we all had similar results, which made it easier to decide on what sub-genre we’d pick to do.
Next we had to design our production company logo, we all made a brainstorm and drew out our ideas then once we reached an agreement, so once we reached a final decision I used Photoshop Pro CC to create the final design. I then drew out the storyboard with Tyanna. When doing the construction for the trailer I was a part of the production team, this included filming, directing and editing alongside other members of my group.

Before we began filming I made sure to review different types of shots so I’d have a clear vision of what to once we started to film. I also gave a selection of ideas in terms of different angles and locations we could use as well as mise en scene. During the editing process I gave ideas as to the placement of certain clips, then I took over most of the editing of the trailer such as colour correcting, cutting, adding transitions, changing speed duration and so on.

Evidence Controlled use of the camera

Post on Titles and font use

Process:

Nia searched on YouTube for a background for our titles and she found a video that was royalty free, showing black ink dripping into a cup of water to create an eerie effect as it works well as a background for the titles. On the other hand although the white was nice I felt as though it would be more difficult to read the titles as we wanted the text to be either white or black which would be an issue as it would blend with this background.
Again she searched for a royalty free pattern on google to layer it on top of the video to darken it which will make it appear more creepier. Once she added the patter over the video she reduced the opacity down to blend both together. I feel dark colours work best for the titles and the ink dropping slowly into the water makes it seem mystifying, this sort of background has been used in most horror trailers, so by using a similar background we’re following conventions. So once that process of combining the two layers had been done she then inserted text into it, then she exported this to add onto the trailer.

Evidence of use of shot transitions

Here I've shown the shot transitions that I've added to make each transition from one scene to another look more smooth. I've looked at an extensive range of horror trailers which use the 3 main shot transitions known as: Dip to black, Cross dissolve and Flickering. Each transition gives a different effect, for example dip to black is a smooth transition and is mostly used at the beginning of a trailer. Cross dissolve is usually used in the linking of one shot with another and flickering is used when a frightening shot comes up so this transition is to make a jump scare much more effective. I've made sure to include all three of these transitions to follow other trailers conventions.

Shots taken/mise-en-scene

These are our test shots for the poster and magazine. We had half the face normal and half the half with make up on it. This shows the both sides of the movie which gives the audiences an insight of what the main character will look like. It was also to show the characters role in the movie, that she has two sides to her. The shirt that I'm wearing is the same shirt that is used in the trailer this is to link the trailer, magazine and poster together.

The reason why we picked this shirt is because it can show the contrast of innocents and evil. The red can represent the evil in the character (Ms.Chapel) but is mainly covered by white, it shows that she wants people to see her fake innocents but her evil shows through.

We tried varies shoots like mid-shots, long-shots, High angled shots this was to see which worked well and which didn't. I tried different poses so that all shots wasn't the same and we felt that my head tilted gave off a more psycho look to my face which is why we picked this photo. We had my hair tied up and down to see which one looked the best, in the end we felt that my hair up looked better because I look scarier and more weird. We tried filters over the lights to change the lighting of the shot, we felt that the pink didn't give off a good effect for our poster so we tried the blue plastic which gave off an icey/cold look which we felt worked best.

This is a list of the sound files we used during the production of our trailer. Compiling this extensive list of audio was a very time consuming task. We played the sounds along side the clip we wanted to feature them in to make sure they fitted correctly. This was a wise decision because it helped us recognise which sounds fit best with each scene in the trailer.

This is the soundtrack we chose to use overall for the trailer. For our soundtrack we decided to use an upbeat song n the beginning to set the equilibrium, then once the disruption stage had happened the soundtrack changed to a softer tone but ha an eerie back tone to it, then the tempo began to pick up. The reason we decided to do this is because it is conventional in horror trailers. It builds up which creates suspense for the audience and notifies them that something bad is about to happen.
