Audience Reasearch - Research into horror posters

So for my audience research I chose 7 people from my school to question their views on contemporary horror posters, I showed them a range of horror posters which they gave feedback on which I turned into a voice over-video. First I had asked them which poster would attract them to go see the film, and most of their answers were different from each others, except two people both picked 'The last exorcism part 2' and another 2 both picked  'Day of the Dead'. From that I can tell that most of them are captivated by distorted abnormal images such as the 'The last exorcism' as the woman on the cover is bent extremely backwards and you can tell she's in pain by the way she has her mouth open like she's screaming in agony. The other cover 'Day of the Dead’ was another popular one and this poster is quite gory so maybe that’s another element that interests my target group.

Then I asked what is it about the poster that interests them and attracts them to want to and see the film? First of the Poster “You’re next” intrigued them as the title indicates that they are targeting the viewer, also the shadows over the face makes the villain look mysterious as “you cant see the eyes but you can kinda depict that they're looking at you”. The poster for "Jessabelle" interested someone else because of the to faces attached to one body because the faces appeared different from each other to show one side that’s evil and the other that’s good which links in with ‘binary opposition’. People liked the poster for ‘The last exorcism’ because of its “simplicity” and that its obvious that the main focus  is of the girl because of how weird and abnormal she looks. That feedback linked with the what another person said about the ‘Sinister’ poster as they also mentioned that they like it to be “basic” because it makes it easier to understand, so I could use this effect for my horror poster. ‘Day of the dead’ intrigued a few of the people because of the gross appearance and makes them question what's wrong with him? So because of his state people are attracted to know more about what happened to them which would be a good effect to include in my poster.
I then asked them to pick a poster that least attracts them? And why?
The feedback I got for this question was interesting and showed me that what attracts people from a horror poster or un attracts is based on people individual preference so there cant be a poster that caters to everyone's preference. So the feedback I got from the saw poster is that it was too gory, another person was bored from the look of ‘the purge’ poster because it was just a guy in a mask so there wasn't any real horror element to that. The ‘oculus’ poster didn’t intrigue most of the people I questioned reason being is that there are just kids and a mirror on the cover, the villain is meant to necessarily be the ‘mirror’ but they haven’t made it clear enough so the poster doesn't appear frightening at all. Also the poster “Ouija” was disliked as it was too plain and basic and doesn't really translate the horror element to it, so ill make sure in my poster I make it clear who the villain is but also keep the poster simple so its clear to the viewer but still translate that it’s a horror film.
